Allow Me to Formally Introduce Myself
For some of you reading this, we’ve been introduced via email. Welcome again!
As for the rest of you, hiiiiiii 👋🏿. That’s me teaching with the red shirt. My student, Mrs. J, is learning on our first day of the academy’s Luxe Locs workshop. You can read about our story here. My apologies for not introducing myself sooner within our blog posts.
My name is Tosha (pronounced like Tasha or think of posh with an ‘a’ at the end and a ‘t’ at the beginning) and I am a licensed cosmetologist and cosmetology instructor.
My story is not your typical hair story…
I did not learn about hair until I enrolled in cosmetology school. Which happened after I graduated college. I grew up as a child of an educator and had the opportunity to attend cosmetology school in high school, but my mom had different plans for me. I mostly wanted to learn how to braid, but after selling insurance for 6 months (hated it), I said, “I’m going to cosmetology school!” I mostly wanted to learn how to braid, but unfortunately, no braid schools were around.
Shortly after gaining my license, I received my instructor's license and I taught cosmetology for about 9 years. I also worked in a salon, which helped me (and my students) in many ways. I was able to relay real-life experiences with them, learned how to build my business through formal training, and built life-long relationships with my students.
While building my brand and working at the school, A Taste of T Academy was shortly created after forming my salon, since my students were seeking mentorships and additional training, during their time in school and after becoming licensed. I realized at that moment, this was definitely needed! I understood that the value, energy, and knowledge I had placed within my instruction was bigger than the school I was teaching.
I had to reach more people…
I hate public speaking because I’m an introvert. However, when I’m in my element, wherever I am most comfortable, I kick butt when it comes to educating my students and clients. I am no-holds-barred. I saw the need and still do, for training that promotes technical and business skills that will create more revenue for individuals who are in this industry.
When I look back on the last 15 years, many wanted me to fail. They wanted to be right: a business major from Howard University would not last doing hair, because doing hair is not a business and those who do it for a living don’t make money.
Too bad for them…
I’ve been going strong for 15 successful years!
And not to brag, because for me, sharing this much is more than I wanted to share (forgive the introvert in me). But let me add, I also have been trained and certified by some of the top brands in the beauty industry: Taliah Waajid, Pravana, Nouritress, Dr. Kari Williams Trichology, K18, Olaplex, Campbell Wigs, and Hair Sprinkles™️ to name a few. Also, while teaching in a private school, I was Teacher of the Year twice. I’m still learning it’s okay to talk about myself and my accomplishments.
